Unraveling Impact of Global and Regional Power Struggles in Syria

In November 2024 Syria gained momentum as the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham militants launched a surprise attack from the country’s northwestern city of Aleppo. In just two weeks, HTS captured a string of major cities before reaching the capital Damascus.

Before mid-December, Damascus had already fallen to the militants, former president Bashar al-Assad was ousted and HTS began talks for formal control of the country.

To shed more light on the context that led to the developments in Syria, Taqrib News Agency (TNA) conducted an interview with professor Haroon Aziz, researcher and author from South Africa. The South African thinker highlighted the deteriorating morale, war fatigue, and geopolitical interests of outside players like the USA, Israeli regime, and the UAE that shape Syria's ongoing conflict and its uncertain path towards recovery.

The author of “Syria 2011-2013: A Historical Perspective” detailed his views on the multifaceted challenges faced by Syria amidst simultaneous battles against foreign-backed militant groups in the country.

Professor Haroon Aziz explained that the Syrian army was severely overstretched due to simultaneous battles on multiple fronts initiated by approximately thirty proxy armed groups. These groups, funded and supported by the USA, Israel, and Turkey, employed a mix of guerrilla and positional warfare tactics, which gradually exhausted the Syrian forces.

He said that war fatigue set in as soldiers struggled with poverty wages ranging from $30 to $70 a month, insufficient to support their families.

He noted that the Syrian air force, once a point of pride, lacked the capacity, resources, and centralized strategy to counter the superior aerial power of foreign forces. This forced soldiers to rely on improvised battle plans while becoming entrapped in hostilities between armed groups and conflicting foreign interests.

Professor Aziz elaborated on the Israeli and UAE plans to influence Syria and Yemen saying,” Israel initially sought to maintain the Syrian government in power but under UAE control and funding.

He said, “The strategy involved dividing Syria into three enclaves: Kurds in the northeast and Druze in the south under Israeli influence, with Damascus under UAE control”, and added,” However, this plan collapsed, leaving the UAE and Jordan scrambling to prevent HTS (Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham) from gaining control of Damascus.”

The South African researcher referred to the role the UAE played in the region including counter-revolutionary activities in Yemen, Libya, and Tunisia and said,” Since normalizing relations with Israel in 2020, the UAE has pursued mutual interests, including securing the Red Sea for trade. However, its attempts to occupy Socotra, a Yemeni territory, faced strong resistance, leading to a humiliating withdrawal.”

The primary discipline of professor Aziz is quantum physics and the second one history and biography. He has devoted his life to research, writing and publishing books. “The Power of Revolution”, “The Art of Compassion-Biography of Essop Jassat, An African Freedom Fighter” and “Fight Racism with Mind Culture” are only few of nearly two dozen books the prolific author and thinker has written so far.
