Director of Iraq’s Al-Monathar Strategic Studies Center:

Messages, Implications of Iraq’s Sixth Post-Saddam Elections – A Turning Point for West Asia

Al-Abbadi described the elections as a “safety valve” for the region, noting that they were conducted successfully and peacefully amid a highly volatile and dangerous environment. “Everyone knows that Iraq’s elections are a stabilizing force in the Middle East,” he said.

Resistance Gains Ground
He highlighted the significant success of resistance-aligned candidates in securing parliamentary seats, calling it a major achievement for preserving the role of the resistance in Iraq. “Our neighbors in Iran, and our brothers in Hezbollah and Yemen, were anticipating this great victory—especially for Iraq’s Shiite majority—because they see them as allies and supporters,” he added.
Al-Abbadi asserted that the 2025 elections were a pivotal moment, despite efforts by some actors to sabotage the process or undermine the political standing of Iraq’s Shiite majority. “All their plans failed,” he said.
Defeat for Normalization Agendas
One of the key outcomes of the elections, according to al-Abbadi, was the defeat of factions seeking to normalize relations with the Zionist regime by promoting candidates aligned with that agenda. “They invested heavily in this strategy, but they failed,” he noted.
He also pointed out that certain foreign-backed elements aimed to weaken the resistance within Iraq, but the election results thwarted their ambitions. “The overwhelming participation of security forces—82% in the special voting process—was unprecedented and demonstrated the commitment of the people, the army, security forces, and the Popular Mobilization Forces to defending Iraq and the resistance axis against the forces of evil led by the U.S. and Zionists,” he said.
From Battlefield to Political Arena
Al-Abbadi emphasized that the elections marked a transition for Iraq—from a battlefield to an active and influential political player within the resistance axis. He cited Baghdad as a key example, where high voter turnout defied both foreign-backed strategies and internal efforts to suppress participation.
Regional Implications
He concluded by stating that the victory of resistance-aligned lists in Iraq’s elections will have far-reaching effects across the region. “The political balance in Iraq will undoubtedly influence the Persian Gulf, Lebanon, Syria, and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he said. “Iraq now plays a powerful role in supporting these fronts—politically and economically—and is redrawing the map in the face of the enemies of the resistance axis, led by the U.S., Zionists, and their allies.”
