Muslim world leaders offer condolences after passing of Pope Francis

Leaders, religious figures across the world of Islam have sent messages to the Vatican after the leader of Catholic Church, Pope Francis passed away on Sunday.

The Office of prominent Iraqi Shia jurist, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Al-Husseini Al-Sistani, offered his condolences on the passing of Pope Francis on Monday and said,” We received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, Pope of the Vatican, who enjoyed a high spiritual standing among many peoples of the world.”

 
The Shia leader added, "He was held in high esteem by all, for his distinguished role in serving the causes of peace and tolerance, and for expressing solidarity with the oppressed and persecuted throughout the world.”

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has offered his deep condolences on the demise of Pope Francis hailing the late Christian leader for his outspoken stances and condemnation of the Israeli regime's genocidal war in Gaza.

He said, "On behalf of the Iranian nation, which has always been a pioneer in establishing global peace, security, dialogue and solidarity between religions, “I honor his name and memory and ask God Almighty to grant the soul of that religious leader eternal peace.”

Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi issued a separate message to offer his condolences to the global community, especially the devoted followers of Pope Francis as they mourn this profound loss.

He said,”His wisdom and compassion touched countless lives, promoting peace and unity across nations and faiths. We share this sorrow and offer our deepest sympathies."

A prominent Iranian cleric and member of the academic board at Shahid Beheshti University, Ayatollah Sayyed Mostafa Mohaghegh Damad also hailed the late pontiff for his humane view, humble character and encouraging rhetoric as he took the path of proximity among all religions and inviting all to global peace and justice.

He expressed hope that the path of the late Christian leader in line with promoting interfaith dialogue will inspire the future generation.

The head of Muslim Council of Elders, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, also mourned Pope Francis’ passing and extended their condolences to “the leaders of the Catholic Church, our Christian brethren, and all advocates of peace and coexistence worldwide.”


The Secretary General of Muslim World League, Muhammad al-Issa, in a message on his social network X, praised the wisdom, just stance and his positive contribution for the Palestinians suffering Israeli genocide in Gaza Strip.


The Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, lauded Pope's staunch opposition to the war and unshakable support for the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people.

“Today, the world mourns the passing of a prominent global religious figure, His Holiness Pope Francis, the Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, who dedicated his papacy to fostering interfaith dialogue and promoting peace across the globe,” stated Basem Naim, a spokesperson for Hamas.

The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah also offered condolences over demise of Pope Francis calling the late pontiff as embodiment of the spirit of interfaith dialogue.
