Speaking to international guests at the 39th International Islamic Unity Conference, he said history shows that any political system divorced from spirituality is destined to fail.
Khomeini cited the Prophet’s establishment of a pact of brotherhood upon arriving in Medina as a timeless model for solidarity, and referenced Qur’anic verse “Hold fast to the rope of God, all together, and do not be divided” as a call to unity. He argued that this “rope” is understood by many scholars to mean the Qur’an and the Prophet’s family, which together safeguard the guidance of the Muslim community.
Condemning Israeli actions in Gaza, he said the atrocities — including the killing of journalists, food blockades, and the deaths of Palestinian children — have exposed the “true face” of a Western civilization that once claimed to champion freedom and justice. He praised Iran’s Sunni community for its steadfast support of the Palestinian cause, calling it proof that attempts to sow sectarian division have failed.
Khomeini warned that Western civilization now faces a crisis of legitimacy due to its departure from divine values, and reiterated that the Qur’an, the Prophet, and the Ahl al-Bayt must remain the central axis of Muslim unity. Echoing Iran’s Supreme Leader, he concluded that Islamic unity is the surest guarantee of the Ummah’s victory.
