Ayatollah Sistanis fatwa saved Iraq from the most dangerous existential threat in contemporary history

According to the Taghrib News Agency, Faleh al-Fayyad said in a statement on the anniversary of the issuance of this fatwa: "The sufficient defense fatwa saved Iraq and its people from the greatest threat they had faced in their contemporary history."

He added that the Popular Mobilization Forces has today become a deeply rooted national force representing all segments and spectra of the Iraqi nation, and that coordination and synergy among the country's security forces have played a significant role in defeating terrorism and maintaining Iraq's security and stability.

The head of the Popular Mobilization Forces also emphasized the continuation of the process of developing the administrative, organizational, educational, and technical structures of this institution, saying: "The improvement of its institutional performance will be pursued within the framework of full compliance with the constitution, military regulations, and the implementation of the orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces."

He noted that this approach will further solidify the position of the Popular Mobilization Forces as an inseparable part of Iraq's security structure and a professional national institution serving the country.

Ayatollah Sistani issued the "sufficient defense" fatwa on June 13, 2014, after the terrorist group ISIS seized control of Mosul and large areas of Iraq.

This fatwa called on able citizens to join the ranks of security forces to defend the country—an action that provided the foundation for the formation of the Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) as a supporting force for Iraq's security institutions.
