Funeral procession of Martyred Leader in Iraq concludes

The funeral processions for the martyred Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, have concluded in Iraq, following massive outpourings of grief and devotion from the Iraqi public in the holy cities of Karbala and Najaf.

Originally scheduled to conclude on Wednesday night, the processions were extended into the early hours of Thursday due to the unprecedented scale of participation by Iraqi mourners, according to the Taqrib News Agency (TNA).

Millions of mourners from across Iraq converged on the holy city of Karbala hours ahead of the procession. The crowd accompanied the convoy carrying the body of Martyr Ayatollah Khamenei and his family members from the city’s entrance, walking a seven-kilometer route that culminated at the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS).

Upon arrival at the shrine of the third Shia Imam, an official welcoming ceremony was held. Subsequently, the body of the martyred Leader was taken into the shrine, where funeral prayers were performed. Following these rites, the coffin was escorted to the holy shrine of Hazrat Abbas (AS) for further mourning ceremonies and prayers.

The intensity of the devotion in Karbala necessitated that organizers delay the planned transfer of the body back to Iran by several hours.

The solemn proceedings in Iraq began late Tuesday night upon the arrival of the martyred Leader’s body at Najaf International Airport. The Iraqi Prime Minister received the body and the accompanying delegation of high-ranking Iranian officials in an official ceremony. Thousands of devotees gathered at the holy shrine of Imam Ali (AS) to perform funeral prayers for the late Leader and his family members.

Following the conclusion of these ceremonies in Iraq, the body of the martyred Leader was flown to the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad. The final farewell and burial ceremony are now rescheduled to take place on Thursday afternoon.
